RALEIGH-- Just under seven months since four people died in a fireworks explosion on Ocracoke Island, new laws regulating professional pyrotechnics have taken effect. State Insurance Commissioner and Fire Marshal Wayne Goodwin said permits will now be required for those operating fireworks shows.
"This type of permit, the certifications that are give by our Office of State Fire Marshal, we are doing something that hasn't been done before. There have been no minimum requirements, there was no uniform definition of what a pyrotechnics expert is," said Goodwin.
Anyone who operates a fireworks show must pass a safety class with an 80 percent grade or higher. The issue was brought to the attention of policy makers after four people died while preparing a fireworks display for Ocracoke Island last July 4th last year.
